What is a serif font anyway? To make it short, serifs are semi-structural details on the ends of some of the strokes that make up letters and symbols. As Mark Boulton so eloquently puts it “Whitespace,” or “negative space” is the space between elements in a composition. More specifically, the space between major elements in a composition is “macro whitespace.” Micro whitespace, is—yes, you’ve guessed it—the space between smaller elements: between list items, between a caption and an image, or between words and letters. This week threw up a problem for me. There were far too many web designs that could have gone into the list. I have chosen my absolute favourite sites this week and had to be especially brutal with my choices. Hopefully that does mean that this weeks standard is especially high. Let me know your thoughts. Since Apple opened up the iPhone for developers to build applications on there have been hundreds of thousands built. They have opened up a whole new market for designers and developers to tap into. This has meant a slew of websites advertising these applications. I’m not sure which site was the first but there are some very clear conventions to be seen throughout this showcase.
